If We Start With WHY, What's My Why?

​What’s my Why? I’m not going to lie, I struggled to articulate my Why and it took me several drafts to come up with something I was happy with that I felt reflected my true values.

As I sat at Queenstown airport on the way back from an amazing 11 day trip around the South Island with my family, I started reading Simon Sinek’s bestselling book ‘Start with Why’ and it really got me thinking about why am I giving up the comfort of a stable job and base salary to start my own business. What is it that makes me tick? What am I passionate about? What drives me? What’s my Why?

Sinek beautifully illustrates the difference between brands and those that succeed because they start with why they are doing it instead of the what and the how. It’s easy to think of my personal Why’s; more flexibility, time with my daughter and family, to be my own boss and financial freedom. But deeper than that why set up my own recruitment business? What is different about me?

What helped me in the end was looking at testimonials and through what others had said about me and what makes me different, I remembered my passion. I love what I do and the core of that is people and helping people. Recruitment for me is about far more than just the transactional placing a candidate in a job. It is about aligning goals, aspirations and helping people and businesses succeed. It is about finding the best fit for everyone. It is more than just a job to me, we spend so much of our lives at work, it is so important to find a role that helps you reach your goals, and aligns with your own personal why.
